John Bercow, 57 ans, depuis sa démission le 31 octobre dernier, du poste de speaker de la Chambre des communes, est accusé d'avoir tyrannisé ses équipes durant ses dix années à la présidence de la Chambre basse et d'avoir laissé le harcèlement, notamment sexuel, se généraliser en raison d'une "culture de déférence", selon un rapport rédigé en 2018 par une ancienne magistrate de la Haute Cour de Londres. 

De nouvelles accusations contre John Bercow ont surgi lorsque le chef du Parti travailliste Jeremy Corbyn, principale formation d'opposition, l'a récemment cité pour une nomination aux Lords. Lord Lisvane, son principal conseiller jusqu'en 2014, a déposé plainte pour harcèlement auprès d'une instance indépendante de la Chambre basse, selon les médias britanniques. 

Et David Leakey, qui a occupé le poste cérémoniel de gentilhomme huissier de la verge noire ("Black Rod") durant sept ans jusqu'en 2017, a accusé l'ex-"speaker" d'avoir "brutalisé des membres du personnel, dont moi, (...) avec ses colères". Il a estimé dans une interview au Daily Mail que le nommer à la Chambre des Lords serait "un scandale".
